ICD-10 Compliance:
The Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) published the final rules for adoption of new HIPAA standards on January 16, 2009. The first rule mandates the updation of version 004010 HIPAA transactions (referred to as 4010) with new 005010 (5010) transactions by January 2012. The second rule mandates the replacement of ICD-9-CM code sets with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets by October 2013.
Update: On August 13, 2014, the Department of Health & Human Services has published a proposed rule that will delay the compliance date for ICD-10 from October 1, 2014 to October 1, 2015.
